Jean E. Smith of Plainfield died Monday. She was 88.
Born July 3, 1924, in Shamokin, Pa., she was the daughter of Robert and Margaret (Jenkins) Brown. She married Francis D. Smith on April 2, 1949, and he survives.
After starting their family in Sharon, Pa., the Smiths moved to Plainfield in 1960. While her husband worked for Public Service Indiana, Mrs. Smith was an Avon representative and also worked for the Indiana Alcohol and Beverage Commission for several years before retirement.
She also was actively involved with community service through the Plainfield Women’s Club, Double Dozen Homemakers Club, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Welcome Wagon, Meals on Wheels, and volunteering for many years at Hendricks Regional Health. The Smiths were longtime members of Plainfield Christian Church.
Also surviving are sons Kent D. Smith and wife Pam of Indianapolis and David Smith and wife Kathy of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter, Lori Gulick of Plainfield; grandchildren Jeremy Smith, Ryan Smith, Nicholas Smith, Robert Smith, Lindsay Smith, Courtney Smith, Drew Smith, and Jennifer Gulick; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services are 1 p.m. Nov. 2 at Hall-Baker Funeral Home in Plainfield, with the Rev. Steve White officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Nov. 1 in the funeral home.
