Symphonic Society wishes you 'Happy Holidays'

— Pine trees stand adorned with garlands. Lights glimmer at dusk as snow gently swirls and coats rooftops like sugar frosted cookies. Caroling, wassail, mistletoe - the traditions of Christmas.

Hendricks Symphonic Society and director Benjamin Del Vecchio present "Happy Holidays," a concert of well-known and not-so-well known Christmas music at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14 and 3 p.m. Dec. 16. Both performances are at Avon Middle School South.

Audiences can enjoy familiar tunes written by composers through the ages, from George Frederic Handel to Irving Berlin. Traditional carols are interspersed with short works by Mendelssohn, Holst, Berlioz and Rimsky-Korsakov, and more, all commemorating the Christmas season. The audience is welcome to sing along with such favorites as "Joy to the World" and "White Christmas."

While most of the 20-plus pieces are performed by orchestra and choir together, each group gets to shine on its own. "Carol of the Bells" delights in its simplicity with voices only, while "Skaters' Waltz," "March of the Toys" from Babes in Toyland, and Ralph Vaughn Williams' "Fanstasia on Greensleeves" propel us into the spirit of the season.

Tickets are $15 at the door ($7 for students with ID, $12 senior discount) and $12 in advance ($5 for students). Advance tickets and season tickets may be purchased online at www.hendrickssymphonic.org; at local Hallmark stores in Mooresville, Plainfield, and Brownsburg; or at the Danville and Brownsburg public libraries. Prices for season tickets are: $40 single adult, $70 - two adult companion tickets, $90 family, $20 student.
