Indiana AIDS Walk taking place Sept. 28

INDIANAPOLIS — At the 2013 Indiana AIDS Walk on Sept. 28, participants will take a “Walk Around the Block” to help raise funds for emergency assistance for Hoosiers living with HIV or AIDS.

The day’s events include the approximately one-mile walk through Herron Morton Place neighborhood plus a Wellness Fair, Pet Pit Stop, food, and live entertainment.

Each year, almost 1,000 people participate in the annual AIDS Walk to raise funds for the Gregory R. Powers Direct Emergency Financial Assistance (DEFA) program. DEFA provides needed assistance to HIV/AIDS patients in emergency situations through AIDS service organizations across the state that provide hands-on care management and assistance. Approximately 10,000 Hoosiers are living with HIV/AIDS.

In 2012, the event raised more than $200,000. The funds were distributed through the Indiana AIDS Fund, the fundraising arm of The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis, as grants to 13 recipient organizations including The Damien Center, Eskenazi Health and the LifeCare program at Indiana University Health. The agencies used the grants to meet the individual emergency needs of 1,903 HIV/AIDS infected persons living in Indiana. Last year, the top five emergency needs were:

1. Medical visits and medication (32.74 percent);

2. Transportation (20.88 percent);

3. Utility payments (6.8 percent);

4. Rent/mortgage payment (6.34 percent); and

5. Dental or optical needs (4.04 percent).

This year, the Indiana AIDS Walk will start and finish at 22nd and Talbott Streets. Entertainment and the Wellness Fair also will be at this intersection. The walk begins with a 5 p.m. step off. Walkers will follow Talbott Street south to 16th Street before turning east toward Alabama Street. The Walk will head north to 22nd Street and finish back at the 22nd and Talbott Street start line. After the walk, Gregs Our Place will offer free BBQ for the first 500 Walkers over age 21 on the patio of the bar. Starting at 7 p.m., Talbott Street will host a Red Party and all donations to the Indiana AIDS Walk will be matched.
