Vicki and Steve Ballentine recently gave a talk and slide show presentation on the Lewis and Clark expedition at the Wa-Pa-Ke-Way DAR chapter meeting at Avon United Methodist Church.
The Ballentines are pictured beside an American flag which has 15 stars as there were 15 actual states in the U.S. at the time of the expedition.
Vicki described her attire, which was made up of a mob hat, a straw hat, an Empire style demise cotton dress, finished with a modesty piece. Steve’s military outfit included a wool dress jacket and beaver hat topped in bear fur.
He gave a history of the expedition as if he were one of the explorers, Pvt. William Bratton. Steve had an old muzzle loading rifle and a leather bag with needed items to shoot the rifle.
He also showed many other items that were needed on the trip. He finished his presentation with a slide show of reenactments using boats made to actual size and using the same kind of wood. The participants lived in tents and cooked all of their meals over an open fire.
Following the presenation, the DAR chapter held its business meeting. Regent Jamie Simek announced that at the recent Indiana State DAR meeting the chapter received the Outstanding Accomplishments in Attaining Chapter Achievement award for Level 1.
The chapter’s next meeting is Sept. 23 at Avon United Methodist Church.
