Plainfield academic team places in top 10

By Brenda L. Holmes

This week the Plainfield High School “We the People” class placed 10th in a national competition held in Washington, D.C.

“The kids did a fantastic job,” said Chris Cavanaugh, PHS instructor and team coach. “We met our goal of placing in the top 10.”

Fellow Indiana team Cathedral High School ended up placing fifth.

“So we had two Indiana teams in the top 10,” Cavanaugh said.

There were 56 teams from across the country competing in mock congressional hearings. The students served as expert witnesses on constitutional issues. After the first round of competition, 10 teams were able to move on to the next round of competition, which took place on Capitol Hill.

“We competed in the Rayburn House Office Building, in the committee room for science and technology,” Cavanaugh said.

Blake Bush is one of the team members who traveled to Washington to compete.

“We’ve been having a lot of fun,” Bush said. “It’s been incredible.”

He said the team has been able to spend a little time with other teams, including Cathedral High School’s and another from Tacoma, Wash.

“The students from Tacoma were our bus mates,” Bush said. “We’ve been doing lots of stuff.”

The competition from the top 10 teams took place on Monday. On Tuesday, they did more sightseeing.

“We’ve been to Sen. (Dan) Coats' office and got to visit with his chief of staff,” Cavanaugh said. “We’ve seen the Supreme Court and now we are at the old post office for lunch.”

He said he was proud of all of his team members.
