Fundraiser offers dinner with a twist

DANVILLE — For Kingsway Community Care Center's first big fundraiser, Executive Director John Mollaun wanted to do something, well, different.

"Nothing against golf outings and traditional dinners, but there's a lot of them to choose from," he said. "I wanted something unique."

Mollaun found it through Grace Medical Home in Orlando. Called "Care to Eat?," set for 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at Lawson & Co., it's a "dinner where we provide no food."

What that means is a group of 10 get a 6-foot round table, white tablecloth, and 10 chairs for $450 (individual tickets are $50). Then they bring their own food. It can be whatever they want. They can even have it delivered.

"They might bring fine china and silver and cater it," Mollaun said. "It's up to them."

Participating groups also are encouraged to decorate their table in a theme. Costumes are optional. Past events at Grace Medical Home have included people dressed as characters from "Gilligan's Island," a royal wedding theme, and a table filled with people all wearing Tim Tebow football jerseys.

Kingsway also provides music for dancing, a photo booth, and prizes for categories like most creative and humorous.

"The idea is it's kind of a competition," Mollaun said.

Heather Prochnow, Kingsway's clinical services manager, likes the idea of eating and wearing whatever she wants.

"Most of the fundraisers I go to are very formal," she said. "I'm excited to eat a hamburger at this one and wear jeans, but still do something for charity."

There are some restrictions: No grills or alcoholic beverages are allowed. Otherwise, the sky's essentially the limit.

"It should be fun to see what other tables are doing," Prochnow said. "You may be eating Steak 'n Shake and the table next to you may be having caviar and champagne."

All proceeds benefit Kingsway Community Care Center, a non-profit that provides reduced-cost medical and dental care to uninsured area residents. For more information, call 272-0708 or visit the website at KingswayCareCenter.org.
