INDIANAPOLIS — RebuildIndy continues to transform Indianapolis neighborhoods, most recently completing the Fountain Square streetscape project, including converting an unsightly parking lot at a major intersection into a plaza for community use.
The project also incorporated improvements at the intersection of Virginia Avenue, Shelby Street, and Prospect Street. Construction on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail along Virginia Avenue continues through November.
The pedestrian plaza, with a new community shelter and fountain paying tribute to the Pioneer Family, adds community space to the bustling cultural district. The streetscape improvements included curb and sidewalk repair, installation of ADA-compliant access ramps, and street resurfacing. The city also installed new storm sewers and landscaping throughout the project area. The Fountain Square streetscape project was part of a citywide $140 million infrastructure investment announced in April.
Construction work continues on the southeast corridor of the trail along Virginia Avenue. Street resurfacing, landscaping, and bridge railings for this portion of the trail will be completed in November.
