Landmarks center offers free illustrated lecture series

INDIANAPOLIS — This spring, Indiana Landmarks sponsors three illustrated lectures that explore preservation and restoration from different angles.

On March 28, retired Indiana University folklore professor and author Henry Glassie talks about the challenges of preserving everyday historic buildings like barns and small houses in his lecture "Indiana Vernacular." Glassie's talk is co-sponsored by Traditional Arts Indiana and will include music by Julane Lund, a hardanger fiddle player from Martinsville. Glassie will sign copies of his book Vernacular Architecture following the program.

On April 11, Scott W. Perkins explores Indiana's connections to Frank Lloyd Wright in his talk "From a Winged Seed: Samara and Frank Lloyd Wright's Indiana Architecture."  Wright designed Samara in 1954 for John and Catherine Christian in West Lafayette. Perkins, a nationally known Wright expert from Oklahoma, places the house in context with Wright's seven extant Indiana houses. The program is made possible with support from the Cornelius and Anna O'Brien Lecture Series Concerning Historic Preservation.

On May 9, cabinetmaker and author Nancy R. Hiller offers "How Restoring a House can Restore a Life." Her talk presents restoration as a revelatory process. Hiller believes restoration shows people what they're made of, as well as enlightening them about the structures they're rehabbing. She is the author of the 2011 coffee-table book A Home of Her Own. A book signing follows the program.

All lectures will be at the Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Ave., and are free and open to the public. The talks begin at 6 p.m., preceded by a reception at 5:30 p.m.

Although the programs are free, Indiana Landmarks requests reservations be made online at vernaculararchitecture.eventbrite.com, samaralecture.eventbrite.com, or restoring.eventbrite.com, or by calling 639-4534.
