Plainfield makes list for job seekers

Hendricks County Flyer

---- — The financial website NerdWallet.com recently released a list of the top 10 communities in Indiana for job seekers, including Plainfield in the number seven spot.

There were several factors considered when compiling the list. The website’s analysis started by asking if the area is growing, if residents can afford to live there comfortably, and whether most people there are employed.

The site assessed growth in the working-age population — ages 16 and older — from 2009 to ‘12 to ensure that the area was attracting workers and exhibiting a trend of upward population growth.

Researchers then looked at the area’s median household income to see if workers make a good living. They also analyzed the monthly homeowner costs, including mortgage payments, to see if the area had a reasonable cost of living.

The list of the best places in Indiana for Job Seekers includes Carmel at number one, Fishers at two, Noblesville at three, Jeffersonville at four, Columbus at five, Kokomo at six, Plainfield at seven, Greenwood at eight, Crown Point at nine, and Bloomington at 10.

In reference to Plainfield, the study noted, “With rolling hills, forest, prairie, two creeks, 205 acres of park land, and a population of nearly 30,000 in 2012, Plainfield is a cozy city located about 25 minutes west of Indianapolis. Growth here is at a 4.4 percent increase in the working-age population between 2009 and ‘12; however, the unemployment rate, at 5.3 percent, is also lower than state average.”

The median income in Plainfield is nearly $57,000, with monthly homeowner costs just under $1,250 in 2012. Plainfield is home to the growing AirTech Park which houses companies such as Amazon, JCPenney, Electrolux, Belkin, and Ozburn-Hessey Logistics.
