PLAINFIELD —

The Plainfield Distinguished Young Woman Program (formerly Plainfield’s Junior Miss) will host its 50th annual college scholarship program this summer.

To celebrate this year, many past contestants and winners are invited to participate and assist with the celebration. Past contestants are encouraged to visit the group’s Facebook page at facebook.com/groups/148293221906440/.Plainfield Junior Miss/Distinguished Young Woman to post their favorite memories and to view photos from the past 49 years.

The Plainfield Distinguished Young Woman Program is sponsored by the Plainfield Optimist Club.

This year’s program is Aug. 17 at Plainfield High School.

Applications are being accepting online at www.DistinguishedYW.org.

Participants must be in their junior year at either Plainfield or Cascade high schools. Only high school girls graduating in May of 2014 that live in the Plainfield and Mill Creek school districts may participate in the program. There is no entry fee.

Applicants will compete in fitness, public speaking, interview, scholastics, and on-stage talent and will be eligible for more than $3,000 in college scholarships.

The winner will advance to Indiana’s state program in Kokomo, where she will be eligible for more scholarships.

All state winners will travel to Mobile, Ala., to participate in personal development activities and community service projects before competing for the opportunity to become the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2014 and for a share of more than $125,000 in cash and scholarships.

Founded in 1958 in Mobile, America’s Junior Miss, now Distinguished Young Women, is the largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls. During its 54 years of operation, the program has provided life-changing experiences for more than 700,000 young women. Last year Distinguished Young Women provided more than $63 million in cash and college scholarships opportunities.

Distinguished Young Women is a scholarship program that inspires high school girls to develop their full, individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments.
