---- — BROWNSBURG — This fall, the town here conducted its first “Let’s Give” Food Drive to help local food pantries during the holiday season.

Donations of non-perishable food items were collected in the town manager’s office weekdays and at the Brownsburg Farmers’ Market on Saturdays.

This past Saturday marked the end of the food drive, which collected more than 1,000 items for the Messiah Lutheran Church food pantry.

“This is the first year that we have done the Let’s Give Food Drive,” Meegan Morgan, executive assistant for the town, said. “We feel like it has been very successful.”

According to Morgan, the idea for the drive started in the summer.

“We started the program over the summer,” she said. “We reached out with the Hendricks County Health Partnership and we started out with them and they had the food pantries come and connect and they would collect every week on Thursday evenings the items that vendors and residents would donate. Then once the summer market was over, our marketing and communications manager (Annisa Rainey), she came up with the promotion of the Let’s Give Food Drive and we created this promotion right here to do a market-long promotion.”

Morgan said the plan is to continue the food drive and expand on it.

“We’ll definitely continue this forward,” she said. “We’ll continue to do the food drive collections in the summer market. Our summer market starts in June and will go through the beginning of October, for the summer of 2014. It’s every Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. here in front of town hall.”

Annisa Rainey, communications manager for the town, said the food was delivered to Messiah Lutheran on Monday afternoon and she was pleased with the way the drive was supported.

Morgan echoed the same sentiment.

“We’ve had community support, we’ve had town employee support, we’ve had several departments that have been a part of it, we’ve had the B.A.S.E. (Before And After School Enrichment) Program that has done a great collection. The Hendricks County Health Partnership, Brownsburg Public Library, and IU Health West, which is our sponsor (also was a big help).”
