SPEEDWAY — The 2013 Indy Jazz Fest will travel here as part of its 10-day lineup. The free concert is 7 to 9 p.m. today at 1201 Main St.
The Farrelly/Markiewicz Jazz Quartet will perform on the stage of the Indy Racing League truck outside of Dallara IndyCar Factory. Members of the quartet include Gene Markiewicz, drums; Jim Farrelly, woodwinds; Sandy Williams, guitar; and Fred Withrow, bass.
Farrelly, saxophone and flute player in the quartet, is one of the top studio woodwind musicians in the Midwest. He has also recorded several top selling CDs under his own name.
Markiewicz is the president of the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation and is on the board as the education chairperson. In 2011 Markiewicz was inducted into their Hall of Fame.
“The quartet is honored to share our love for jazz with the Speedway community during the 2013 Indy Jazz Fest,” Markiewicz said in a press release.
The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation and Indy Jazz Fest have merged and are presenting the 2013 Indy Jazz Fest. The foundation also coordinates education throughout the year.
The Speedway Chamber of Commerce, Dallara, and Lino’s Coffee worked in conjunction with the Indy Jazz Fest committee to make this event in Speedway possible. Lino’s will be serving authentic Italian food, gelato, and wine and local craft beers from Bier Brewery. For every pint of Bier sold, Lino’s and Bier Brewery will donate $1 to the Indy Jazz Foundation.
“This is the first year Speedway is hosting a concert in the Indy Jazz Fest lineup,” said Connie Harris, executive director of the Speedway Chamber of Commerce. “An event of this scale will attract attention to Speedway and bring the community together for a night of music.”
Attendees are encouraged to come early to play bocce ball and cornhole, view racing art from the Speedway Centre for the Arts, participate in an Italian wine tasting, and tour the Dallara IndyCar Factory from 5 to 7 p.m. Coolers are permitted and attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved inside the garage of Dallara.
The concert will take place between 12th and 13th streets in front of the Dallara IndyCar Factory, next to the headquarters of Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. Street parking will be available south of 12th and north of 13th streets and at the Motorsports Technology Building at 1180 Main St.
Other locations in the Indy Jazz Fest lineup include the Madame Walker Theatre, Jazz Kitchen, Central Library, and Chatterbox.
