Avon Marching Black & Gold wins Bands of America Super Regional

The Avon Band celebrated a victory at the Bands of America Super Regional competition Oct. 19-20 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

More than 50 bands from seven states joined Avon and other local bands for the two-day event. There were 14 bands that advanced to the finals competition on the last evening. Other local bands that made it to the finals included Ben Davis, Lawrence Central, Carmel, Greenwood, and Center Grove.

The Avon Marching Black & Gold, with its 290 members, performed its show entitled "Feast or Famine." The show features musical selections that are boisterous and loud to represent a musical feast, and others that are softer and slower in nature to suggest famine.

Under Director Jay Webb, the Avon band program has won either a state or national championship (or both) for 17 consecutive years. Recently, a group of parents and alumni formed Avon Band Together to help support the marching band program.

"The Avon band promotes so many attributes that we want to see in our kids: dedication, teamwork, sportsmanship, time management, and an appreciation of the performing arts," said John Sparzo, vice president of Avon Band Together. "Membership in Band Together is open to everyone who wants to help current and future Avon High School students excel on the state, regional, and national band scene."

The public as well as current and potential Band Together members are invited to learn more about this year's show from Webb during an informal get-together 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at Avon High School (enter door No. 41). Webb will reflect on the current season and share his thoughts about the upcoming Bands of America Grand National competition. RSVPs are requested, but not required, by e-mailing AMBGFAN1@gmail.com.
