Homeless initiative welcomes four new board members

CNHI

— Four new board members have joined the current board of Family Promise of Hendricks County: Mike Hostetler, Jill Hostetler, Erin Tanner, and Janie Smith.

Hostetler is a manufacturing executive and, along with his wife Jill, has helped to develop other Family Promise affiliates in Indiana and South Carolina. Jill has also held the position of executive director.

Tanner is a finance and information technology director with the Peace Learning Center, and Smith is a community liaison with the Children’s Bureau Community Partners for Child Safety.

Other members of the board include Larry Champion, Dr. Mike Hartley, Tim Campbell, Debi Campbell, Sharon Merchant, and Tammy Brinkman. Family Promise of Hendricks County is a newly formed homeless initiative, the first of its kind in the county.

No other shelter options are available for homeless families with children in Hendricks County. Family Promise works to keep these families integrated into the community and keeps families together. This year alone, there are currently more than 250 school-aged children who are homeless in Hendricks County, and this number does not even consider the preschool aged children who have no place to call home.

The goal of Family Promise of Hendricks County is to open their doors of service to the county’s homeless families, the day center, at the beginning of 2014. The day center will have showers, laundry facilities, and storage space. It provides guests with an address and use of phones and computers to help them with job searches, as well as an opportunity for them to stay in touch with relatives and friends. It also has space for the children to play and do their homework.

The current list of churches in the community who will host the families during the evenings and overnight include Avon Christian Church, Connection Pointe Christian Church, Mary Queen of Peace, Northview Christian Church, Pittsboro United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist Community Church, and Westbridge Christian Church. The Family Promise Board is currently seeking a day center location within the county.
