The third annual Park 2 Park Relay - a running event dedicated to raise awareness and funds for the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County - will be conducted June 15.
Teams of two to six runners will traverse Hendricks County from Sodalis Nature Park near Plainfield to McCloud Nature Park near North Salem, via winding county roads and park trails while they visit multiple unique locations and communities along the way. Runners take turns running legs along the course, exchanging relay style for the 45-mile distance.
"It is important to realize that the P2P can be completed by individuals of moderate fitness levels," said William Roche, superintendent of Hendricks County Parks & Recreation. "One does not need to be an elite athlete to compete. While the total distance of 45 miles may seem daunting, each runner completes separate legs of the route, averaging about 11 miles each for a four-person team. This distance is easily within reach for many runners, particularly the thousands that complete the Mini-Marathon each May."
Furthermore, members of the race committee point out that this sort of relay race turns the usual solitary sport of running into a social (team) experience.
Sponsorships for the Park 2 Park Relay are designed to help corporate partners promote health and wellness in the workplace.
"Providing your employees with free entries into the Park 2 Park is a great way to build camaraderie among workers and to demonstrate your commitment to their fitness," said Jeff Banning of Banning Engineering, race director and sponsor of the event.
Dr. John Sparzo, vice president of medical affairs at Hendricks Regional Health, added, "With obesity rates and healthcare costs skyrocketing, there is no better time to invest in local parks and in your employees. Support of the parks improves quality of life and helps to develop venues for physical activity for everyone. For employers with self-funded insurance plans, investment in health and wellness directly benefits the bottom line."
