Trooper's credited with aiding multiple residents in same week

Sgt. Pornteb Nathalang of the Indiana State Police's Enforcement Division has had a knack for being in right place at the right time lately.

First he performed CPR on an Indianapolis man suffering a heart attack. Then he aided a woman who was having difficulty breathing. 

At about noon on March 26, Nathalang came upon a property damage crash on Interstate 65 near the 111.8 mile marker. While assessing the crash of the 2009 Chevrolet work van, Nathalang realized that the driver, Benjamin Lindley, 48, was in full cardiac arrest.

Nathalang removed Lindley from his vehicle and performed CPR until relieved by the Indianapolis Fire Department emergency medical personnel. Lindley was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and is expected to survive.

Crash investigators learned that Lindley was speaking with his fiancee on the phone and complained that he felt ill. While the vehicle was still in motion, Lindley lost consciousness and drove into the side of a semi-tractor trailer. The driver of the semi was not injured.

Nathalang was contacted by two Indianapolis news stations requesting interviews concerning the events of the crash involving Lindley. At approximately 6 p.m. Monday, Nathalang met with some news stations at the 41 milemarker of Interstate 69 (State Road 332) near a local gas station to speak about the events of March 26.

Nathalang had completed the interview and was leaving in his car when he was flagged down by a frantic woman talking on her cell phone. The woman explained that she had pulled over and dialed 911 after her mother had become unresponsive while riding in the rear seat of her car.

With cameras rolling, Nathalang found the woman to be lethargic and unresponsive, and determined her oxygen tank was not delivering any oxygen. Nathalang discovered that a valve on the oxygen tank had been installed incorrectly and was not allowing the oxygen to flow freely. After correcting the valve configuration the woman immediately begin felling better and asked Nathalang to "please close the door, I'm cold."

The women were able to continue their trip and the 911 dispatch was disregarded.

Nathalang is a 28-year veteran and is the ISP Motorcycle Patrol North zone sergeant.
