BROWNSBURG — Panoony’s Pizza and Wings, was the site of a pizza eating contest Saturday between two town managers, as a fundraiser for WYRZ-FM.
The fundraiser took place at Panoony’s, located at 1447 E Main St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The contest, which took place from 11 a.m. to noon, pitted Brownsburg Town Manager Grant Kleinhenz and his counterpart from Pittsboro Jason Love against one another. The goal was to see who could eat more of The Big Noony, a monstrous 30-inch pizza with nine toppings, in an hour.
Shane Ray, who owns XRB Radio in Brownsburg and will be a part of WYRZ, explained the need for the fundraiser.
“It’s donation-based, listener-based, so we have to get some money to get it on the air,” he said. This is our first fundraiser and it’s Panoony’s first anniversary (this month). We decided to join up with them and have the Brownsburg town manager faceoff against the Pittsboro town manager, splitting this pizza, which is called The Big Noony.”
Ray said they raised money a couple different ways Saturday.
“We have some sponsorship because we’re also broadcasting live on XRBradio.com and we do have a donation can (at the fundraiser) and at this website you can donate too, at wyrz.org,” he said. “It’s all tax deductible.”
According to Panoony owner Ian Patterson, the typical challenge features two people trying to finish the pizza together in an hour.
“It’s called the Panoony’s Challenge,” he said. “It’s two people, one pizza, nine toppings, in an hour. They win shirts and gift certificates and the pizza is on us if they can finish it. It’s $38.99 regular price.”
For this fundraiser, Ray said they had to tweak the challenge just a bit.
