'Sound of Music' alive at Beef & Boards

Featured family show for 40th anniversary season

INDIANAPOLIS — If ever there was a musical that generations of families have come to embrace, it's the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic "The Sound of Music."

Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre celebrates this time-honored tradition by presenting "The Sound of Music" as the featured family show of its 40th anniversary season.

Opening May 16 and on stage through June 30, "The Sound of Music" tells the true story of a young woman whose free spirit and love of music leads her down a very different path than she'd planned after she is sent to serve as governess for seven children.

Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of their stern father, a widowed naval captain. But World War II is imminent, and their romance will be tested before they've been able to truly begin their new life together.

This final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. The motion picture, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, remains the most popular movie musical of all time.

Cara Statham Serber returns to Beef & Boards in the role of Maria Rainer, the young woman whose plans to become a nun never happen. David Schmittou, most recently seen earlier this season at Beef & Boards as Mortimer Brewster in "Arsenic & Old Lace," plays the dashing Capt. Georg von Trapp. Beef & Boards favorites Sarah Hund and Eddie Curry return to reprise their roles of Elsa Schraeder and Max Detweiler, respectively, while Suzanne Stark returns to play the Mother Abbess. Local young performers have been cast in the roles the von Trapp children.

There are 52 performances of "The Sound of Music" scheduled at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre, 9301 N. Michigan Road. Tickets range from $37.50 to $62.50 and include Chef Odell Ward's dinner buffet, fruit and salad bar, and select beverages. As Beef & Boards' featured family show, "The Sound of Music" offers $10 discounts off tickets for all children ages 3 to 15. Discounts are also available for groups of 20 or more. Parking is free.

For reservations call the Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre Box Office at 872-9664. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays.
