A deputy of the Marion County Sheriff’s Department has been arrested for drunk driving.
Officers with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department took Matthew Milharcic, 58, of Avon, into custody just after 2:30 a.m. Friday.
In an incident report, officers say they observed Milharcic driving westbound near the 9700 block east of County Road 100 North in Hendricks County when both of his passenger-side tires left the roadway. They add it happened again when they began following Milharcic and he was approaching a construction zone. Just before police pulled him over, Milharcic allegedly crossed the center line after turning onto County Road 900 East and coming to a stop.
Officers report Milharcic had slow, slurred speech, glassy and unfocused eyes, slow manual dexterity, and smelled of alcohol. They add he admitted to drinking that night and identified himself as a deputy with the Marion County’s Sheriff’s Department. Milharcic was also driving an unmarked department vehicle.
Police say Milharcic was arrested without incident and charged with operating while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. The report states he failed field sobriety tests and had a 0.21 blood alcohol content.
Fox 59, the Hendricks County Flyer’s newsgathering partner, reports that Milharcic was fired from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department following his arrest. Milharcic had been with the department 37 years and formerly served as a lieutenant in the criminal warrants division. He had no previous disciplinary issues.
