MSD of Wayne Township names District Teacher of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS —

Pamela Bacon, an English and language arts teacher at Ben Davis High School, has been named Teacher of the Year in the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township for 2013. The award was announced at a ceremony at Bridgeport Elementary School.

“I was shocked,” Bacon said. “Actually, I’m still shocked. I did not expect to be named. I just feel thrilled and honored.”

Bacon has been an educator with Wayne Township for 13 years. For many of those years she served as the media specialist and worked closely with the English department. Sandi Squire, in her first year as principal of BDHS, had served as the department chair.

“Pam has always been an incredible resource for all teachers but especially English teachers,” Squire said. “She was there to help with research and was the first to bring several databases to the district. She’s just amazing. Not only did she run the huge media center, she also taught classes in there every day.”

Bacon decided to return to the classroom full time and has become the school’s developmental reading specialist.

“She started Read 180, which is geared for students reading two or three grade levels below where they should be,” Squire said. “We also have a very young English department. She really has become a mentor to those young teachers.”

Each school in MSD Wayne selects its own Teacher of the Year. A committee from Butler University’s School of Education selects the district’s overall winner, who will then go on to compete for the Teacher of the Year honor at the state level. That competition is overseen by the Indiana Department of Education.

Bacon said she was in great company at the awards ceremony.

“It was one of the neatest things to get to learn about the other great teachers in the district,” she said. “I’m in excellent company.”
