Plainfield celebrates multiple awards

PLAINFIELD — The Town of Plainfield has received several awards lately and will soon be honored by the Indiana Park and Recreation Association.

IPRA has chosen Plainfield Parks and Recreation to receive honors during the 2013 Awards of Excellence, which will be presented during a special banquet on Jan. 16 in Indianapolis.

Parks director Clay Chaffin made the announcement to the public at the Plainfield Town Council meeting held Oct. 28.

Plainfield Parks and Recreation was nominated and selected as the Outstanding Agency by IPRA. This award is given to an agency that has significantly enhanced parks and recreation in the community and/or Indiana.

Nate Thorne, deputy director of Plainfield Parks and Recreation, will be honored as the Outstanding Professional for 2013 and additionally, the department will be receiving program awards for their Silver Sneakers Program and the Optimist Miracle Movers.

Finally, Plainfield Town Council member Renea Whicker will be recognized as the Elected Official of the year. Whicker serves as the town council’s liaison to the parks department.

Each year, IPRA Awards of Excellence are presented to individuals and agencies across Indiana to honor their efforts — both personally and professionally in the field of parks and recreation.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these accomplishments,” Chaffin said. “I would like to thank the board for your support.”

Winners are evaluated by their peers in the industry based upon a scoring system for quality of the project, impact on the community, and creative solutions as well as other criteria.

Thorne has been very active with this organization for many years.

The Indiana Park and Recreation Association, founded 1916, is a state not-for-profit membership association dedicated to advancing the value of parks and recreation and those that provide it.

Chaffin also unveiled a new video that has been created on Plainfield Parks and Recreation. The video gives an overview of what the department has to offer the community. It can be found by visiting the town’s website at www.townofplainfield.com. Click on “Parks & Rec” and scroll down to click on “Video Tour of Recreation & Aquatic Center.”

“We get a lot of calls about the parks and what we have,” Chaffin said. “This is a place we can direct people to go and see a quick overview of what we have in Plainfield.”
