Christel House to hold construction fair

A plethora of construction workers are needed for new schools being built on the former Central State grounds.

Christel House, along with Shiel Sexton, is hosting a workforce fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the Hawthorne Community Center gym, 2220 W. Ohio St., Indianapolis.

The available trades will be masonry; roofing; glass, glazing, and storefront; caulking; finish carpentry; framing, insulation, drywall, and EIFS; acoustical ceilings; painting; doors, frames, and hardware; flooring; specialties including locks and toilet partitions; equipment and furnishings; and food service equipment.

“We are interested in reaching out to that immediate community and make sure we provide opportunities for the contractors doing work on our building, especially people in the construction trade who are out of work,” said Carey Dahncke, executive director of the Christel House Academy. “We’re looking at this as a holistic investment in the westside community.”

Interested workers may pre-submit resumes to Paulette Gardiner by e-mailing to pgardiner@hawthornecenter.org.

Dahncke said they’ve already received a fair amount of buzz about the project.

INDIANAPOLIS — “We’ve heard a lot of positive feedback and are looking forward to it,” he said. “Hopefully it will give some good opportunities for work and simple engagement in the project. We think this will make a substantial impact in this immediate community.”

Christel House’s mission is to work with children and families who can’t afford private schooling or to move to an area with better public schools.

“What we’ve been trying to do on our westside campus is go after families who typically qualify for free or reduced lunches, and give them an educational experience that’s on par with a private school or high-performing public school,” Dahncke said.

The westside academy will be at the corner of Washington Street and Tibbs Avenue. Workers have already broken ground on the site. Because many buildings have been there over the years, they’ve had to do a lot of soil work before even starting construction.
