---- — The Gathering Together’s fifth annual Soup’s On event will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 26 and will provide an opportunity for guests to see the results of a five-month construction effort that doubled the organization’s capacity to serve the terminally ill and their families.
Founded in 2001 by hospice-trained nurse Rita Fiorentino, the home has seen steady growth and is unique to Indiana, providing its services free of charge. More than a warm place to die with dignity, The Gathering Together provides a haven for families seeking a nonclinical setting for their loved ones in their final days.
Soup is a mainstay at the home, where Fiorentino cooks pots of it to serve a crowd. Volunteers join in and the Soup’s On event was born as a perfect way to introduce the facility’s services to the local community. Tickets for Soup’s On are available for $10, which entitles attendees to several varieties of soup and other homemade goodies.
The Gathering Together will also offer for sale the chutneys and jellies, foods, jewelry, scarves, and other handmade products that have become a way to fund its operation. The funding for the non-profit comes solely from individual donations, corporate sponsorships, and fundraisers.
Due to the expansion, the home needs to raise $50,000.
“We are so excited to hold another Soup’s On event and to show off our expansion to the community,” Fiorention said. “It has truly been a community-wide event with many local vendors offering their products and services free or greatly reduced to help our cause. The entire project could not have been possible if it weren’t for our terrific crew of regular volunteers, made up of former Hendricks County Habitat for Humanity folks and a significant number of local church members.”
The Gathering Together is at 147 N. Center St., Plainfield. For more information on Soup’s On, contact Fiorentino by calling 797-2795 or by e-mailing to email@example.com or visit the website at www.thegatheringtogether.org.
