PHS class of 1968 reunites for a reason

PLAINFIELD — The Plainfield High School class of 1968 came together during homecoming weekend to celebrate its 45-year reunion named “reunion with a reason.”

There were around 105 people at the reunion, with 68 classmates and five or six teachers enjoying activities throughout the weekend.

The Saturday celebration at The Palms in Plainfield was the highlight of the reunion, with entertainment provided by former classmates.

Entertainment was provided by Dee Bell Becker, Dave Petty, Kathy Robbins Arrington, Rachel Maxwell Johnson, Roland Schinbeckler, and the high school garage band called Sound Relation featuring 1968 grads Allan Knoll, Raymond Veith and Tom Johnson.

The class gets together once every five years, always in Plainfield.

“This year was the biggest turnout and people came from a further distance,” said co-chair Charlie Nelson.

Some people traveled more than 2,000 miles to reconnect with their former classmates and teachers.

New this year, classmates were asked to donate to the Plainfield High School Student Assistance Fund which helps students who are in financial need. Nelson and co-chair Carol Wendt went to the student assistance counselor in the guidance department at PHS, Justine Thompson, to help with academic support at the school.

“They first contacted me in the spring and said they would like to have a meaningful experience this year for their reunion,” Thompson said. “It’s wonderful that they’re doing this positive and meaningful thing.

“We never want our students to miss out on a fully enriched experience. The prosperity from the class comes through and then is recycled back into the community.”

Wendt and Nelson said they decided to go this route because the foundation of education they and their classmates received from their teachers and the school has made a strong impact on their lives.

“Hopefully we’ll make more of an effort to get together more often,” Nelson said. “We always have a good time and now we’re trying to create something with donating that can keep going for years to come from our class.”

The PHS class of 1968 is now thinking about holding a 47 ½-year reunion.
