Wayne Township schools to close Thursday

INDIANAPOLIS — The administration of the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township has decided to cancel school Sept. 26 due to the funeral procession for Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer Rod Bradway.

Bradway was shot and killed in the line of duty in the early morning hours of Sept. 20 while responding to a domestic disturbance in the 6700 block of Eagle Point Drive North. He had served with IMPD for 10 years.

Before serving with IMPD, Bradway was a member of the Wayne Township Fire Department. His funeral procession will leave Banker’s Life Fieldhouse, travel west on Washington Street, south on Holt Road, west on Sam Jones Expressway (passing by the Wayne Township Fire Station 81 where he served), north on High School Road past the Emergency Services Education Center and the Wayne Township Fire Headquarters, east on 10th Street, and north on Lynhurst before leaving the MSD of Wayne Township boundaries.

The funeral procession is expected to include about 1,000 police cars as well as other non-police vehicles.

Administrators say they are honored that Wayne Township has been included in the funeral procession and feel that it is in the interest of student safety to close school for the day. Organizers believe the procession will arrive in Wayne Township at about 1:30 p.m. and could last several hours. Officials believe this could diminish their ability to provide afternoon bus transportation for students.

Rather than leaving parents uncertain as to when their children will be home, or facing the prospect of children sitting on buses for hours in traffic, the administration decided to cancel school for the day.

The district has already included two extra days in the calendar in anticipation of inclement weather so the students will not be required to make this day up at the end of the school year.

After-school events at the secondary schools will still be conducted as scheduled.

Similarly to a day in which school is cancelled due to weather, childcare will be offered for children already enrolled at the Wayne Township Preschool between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. and the YMCA will offer daycare at Bridgeport Elementary School. Parents who are interested in registering for the YMCA program may call the YMCA at 484-9622.

Donations may be made for Bradway’s family be contributing to the Officer Bradway Family Fund at the Professional Officers Credit Union, 1502 E. Washington St. or by calling 327-2600.
