Crash causes gas leak; businesses evacuated

Hendricks County Flyer

AVON — A man was injured after his pickup was struck and hit a gas meter, causing a leak.

The accident happened about 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Prestwick Pointe in Avon. Lt. Jim Yetter of the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department reported a pickup truck was heading southbound on County Road 525 East when the driver ran a red light and was struck by a box truck.

Yetter said the pickup careened across a grass median and eastbound lanes, and then onto the parking lot of a strip mall on the southside of U.S. 36. The pickup then struck a gas meter attached to a standalone building on the far west end of the complex.

“It continued across the parking lot and down into a ravine by the railroad tracks,” Yetter said. “It traveled several hundred yards.”

The driver of the pickup, a 51-year-old male from Indianapolis, had to be extricated. He was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital.

“He had quite a few injuries, but nothing believed to be life-threatening,” Yetter said.

The driver of box truck was not hurt.

Because the gas meter was leaking, emergency officials evacuated businesses at the strip mall until Vectren workers could arrive and shut the gas off.

“It was simply a precautionary measure,” Yetter said.
