Smoke on the Mountain offers wholesome fun with a message

INDIANAPOLIS —

The cast of Beef & Boards’ “Smoke on the Mountain” brings to life a group of heart-warming characters at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

The show is set in 1938 in North Carolina’s Smokey Mountains. It tells the story of the Singing Sanders Family who are putting on a Gospel sing after a five-year hiatus.

Each number brings out more instruments and the cast played all of the instruments for the show — sometimes multiple instruments in one number — instead of relying on an orchestra or band.

This show first came to Beef & Boards in 2007 and several members of the original cast return.

Sarah Hund returns as June Sanders; Pam Pendleton as June’s mother, Vera Sanders; and John Vessels as the Rev. Mervin Oglethorpe.

New to the cast this season is Bobby Taylor as the family’s patriarch Burl Sanders; Brian Gunter playing his brother, Stanley Sanders’ and Ashlie Roberson and Keith Potts play the twins, Denise and Dennis Sanders.

The characters put on a show for the congregation — while giving testimony between each number. And, of course, there is a lot of humor in the presentation.

As the audience gets to know the family, it gets caught up in the stories and how each character has grown. By the end, everyone is cheering for the Sanders family.

This is a great family show suitable for all ages. There were only two “swear” words in the show. Well, one word that was said twice.

“Smoke on the Mountain” runs through Aug. 18. Tickets range in cost from $37.50 to $62.50 and include Chef Odell Ward’s dinner buffet, a fruit and salad bar, and select beverages. Discounts are available for children and groups of 20 or more. Parking is always free.
