AVON — Avon residents can help the environment and beautify their homes by participating in the Town of Avon Spring Tree Sale.
The town’s annual spring tree sale runs March 18 through April 19. Each tree, except for evergreens and River Birch, is about 1.5 inches in circumference and 8 to 10 feet tall, weighing about 150 pounds. Evergreens will be 3 to 4 feet tall and weigh about 100 pounds. River Birch will be sold in clump form and will be 6 to 8 feet tall.
The cost of each tree ranges from $55 to $70. The trees can be used in yards or common areas, and specific species can be planted along the street between the curb and sidewalk.
Available species for yards and tree lawns include the October Glory Maple, Sugar Maple, Bur Oak, and Downy Serviceberry. Because of their size and growth characteristics, the Tulip Poplar, River Birch, Saucer Magnolia, Black Tupelo, White Spruce, and Emerald Arborvitae are available but they will be for use in yards and common areas only.
The Town of Avon will once again deliver trees free to in-town residents.
Tree sale information and order forms may be obtained on the Avon website at www.AvonGov.org or picked up at town hall.
Payment is due at the time of ordering, and trees will be delivered to Avon residents within incorporated town limits April 30 through May 3. Non-residents can pick up their trees May 4 at Town Hall Park.
Avon achieved Tree City USA status as awarded by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Urban Forestry Division from 2007 to ‘11. The 2012 application has been submitted as well. It is the only town in Hendricks County to earn such a designation, which is bestowed upon communities that dedicate resources to developing a tree-care program. The program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
