Brownsburg holding food drive

The Town of Brownsburg is kicking off a food drive to help local pantries keep shelves stocked with non-perishable items going into the holiday season.

Town administrators are asking for the community’s support of the “Let’s Give” collection of canned and boxed items through Nov. 23 so area families in need can keep meals on the table.

Donations may be made in the Town Manager’s office from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and at the Brownsburg Farmers’ Market from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, both located at Brownsburg Town Hall, 61 N. Green St.

Through its relationship with the Hendricks County Health Partnership and IU Health West Hospital, Brownsburg Farmers’ Market vendors and shoppers have donated healthy foods, including fresh organic produce, to local food banks throughout the summer.

“The Hendricks County Food Pantry Coalition’s member pantries served nearly 12,000 families last year.” Bronwsburg Town Manager Grant Kleinhenz said. “With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s important to keep in mind our neighbors who rely on food pantries. The town is so pleased with the generosity of the Farmers’ Market shoppers and vendors, and we’re counting on our residents, businesses and civic organizations to help us make sure Hendricks County families don’t go without a meal this holiday season.”

The Hendricks County Health Partnership’s Physical Activity and Nutrition Workgroup offers the following suggestions for healthier food drive donations:

• Tuna packed in water

• Peanut butter

• Dried or canned beans

• Boxed shelf-stable milk or soy milk

• Ready-made sugar free pudding

• Low-salt canned nuts

• Fiber rich cereals

• Oatmeal

• Whole grain pasta

• Brown rice

• Macaroni and cheese

• Canned fruit packed in juice

• Canned vegetables and tomato products

• Boxed, powdered or flaked potatoes

• Raisins and other dried fruits

• Sugar-free boxed gelatin

• 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice

• Olive or canola oil

• Spices such as basil, cinnamon, chili powder, garlic and onion powders, pepper or oregano.

Everyone who contributes non-perishable items in the town manager’s office or at the Brownsburg Farmers’ Market will receive Market Bucks to use as a discount on a purchase with participating market vendors.

The final day of the “Let’s Give” food drive is Nov. 23, during the Farmers’ Market.
