Sidney Lee Nighbert of Mooresville died Saturday. He was 96 and had formerly resided in Plainfield.
Born April 15, 1917, in Hanover Township, Jefferson County, he was one of five children born to the late Shirley Lee and Lulu Sutherland Nighbert.
Mr. Nighbert grew up working on the family farm. After marriage, he worked at Yunkers Pearl Packing in Madison.
From 1943-45, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a hydraulic specialist on the B-29 Super Fortress with the 870th Bombardment Squadron 497th Bombardment Group serving stateside and on the island of Saipan. He later worked for C. A. Roberts Steel Tubing, now known as EMJ, retiring in 1982.
His retirement careers included a lawn service business and finally driving for National Car Rental until he was 90.
He was a long-time member of Plainfield Christian Church.
Survivors include children Judy (Jim) Newman of Flint, Mich., Alta Linthicum of Del City, Okla., Russell (Barbara) Nighbert of Mooresville, and Noell (Blee) Nighbert of Plainfield; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren with another one on the way.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 74 years, Sara A. Noell Nighbert, who died last October; an infant daughter, Olive Dyann; three sisters and a brother.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Plainfield Christian Church. Interment will be at the New Bethel Cemetery in Jefferson County.
