Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) were dispatched to the 7000 block of West 56th Street at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday on a report of two vehicles racingin the area.
9-1-1 operators provided updated information that included that one of the vehicles had left the roadway and struck a tree inside Eagle Creek Park.
Two males were seen running from the vehicle after the vehicle collided with the tree.
Officers arrived on the scene and found an unidentified male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the leg and a graze wound to the head. The unidentified male was transported by EMS crews to IU Health Methodist Hospital in stable condition.
Officers were told that a black SUV was chasing and shooting at the vehicle the victim was in as it drove down West 56th Street.
It is believed that the victim and friends left a large juvenile party in the 4400 block of Lafayette Road after it was closed by detectives from IMPD’s Nuisance Abatement Unit.
After leaving the party, the victim is believed to have gone to another location where he and others were involved in a disturbance.
The party on Lafayette Road was being held in a location that was not properly approved to hold such an event. Detectives from IMPD’s Nuisance Abatement Unit responded and observed a large number of juveniles both inside and in the parking lot. Detectives immediately ordered the party closed and cited the owner of the building and party’s promoter for violations of city ordinances.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department encourages residents to remind teens that unsanctioned parties could face scrutiny by IMPD or city representatives which could result in the issuance of fines or possible arrests.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call CRIME STOPPERS of Indiana at 262-TIPS (8477).
