Groups prepare to host Civil War event

DANVILLE — Taking Hendricks County back in time to the days of the Civil War is the goal of the Danville Public Library and Hendricks County Museum this weekend, as Danville will play host to Civil War Heritage Days on Saturday and Sunday.

There are several events planned throughout the weekend.

Opening ceremonies are 9 a.m. June 23 on the Danville Courthouse Square, with several activities following. Events will kick off at 9 a.m. June 24 and run until about 4 p.m.

One addition this year is the Grand Ball from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday in the Courthouse Rotunda. Cost is $10 per person and all in the community are welcome.

There will be a dance workshop at 7 p.m. Friday to allow participants to learn dance etiquette and period dances. The workshop is free, but registration is required and may be made online at www.dpindiana,org.

The two-day event also includes re-enactments, encampments, demonstrations, and displays meant to educate those who attend.

”We knew going into last year, there was a lot of interest in the Civil War, but we didn’t grasp how much until we did this,” said Cindy Rutledge, one of the event organizers. “I was most fascinated by the kids and how much they loved learning about history in a different way.”

This year’s event will also include a vendor and food court on the south side of the courthouse square. Performances on the square stage will include music, theater, and the reading of letters from the Hendricks County Museum archives that were written by actual Civil War soldiers and their wives.

The event will also include a collection of horse harnesses in Steve Steinway’s building, which is the former Lyle’s Barbershop on South Washington Street. During the Civil War, horse harnesses were standard items in a barn.

Events for the Civil War Heritage Days will be at various locations in Danville including the library, the museum, the Courthouse Square, the Courthouse Rotunda, and the Hendricks County Government Center.
