— Authorities with the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) last week announced the mistaken release of an offender from authorities in Chicago, Ill.
Steven L. Robbins, 44, was released Jan. 29 from the Indiana State Prison on a court order to the Cook County Circuit Court where he was facing a charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. The charges against Robbins there were dropped and Illinois authorities mistakenly released him instead of returning him to IDOC's custody.
A warrant for his arrest was issued in both Indiana and Illinois. He was re-arrested by the Cook County Sheriff's Department on Friday in Kankakee, Ill., and was returned to the Indiana State Prison on Saturday.
Robbins was born in Gary and is serving a 60-year sentence for murder and carrying a handgun without a license out of Marion County. He arrived at the Indiana State Prison on Oct. 25, 2004, and his earliest projected release date is June 29, 2029.
