Library unveils ‘world’s largest’ NFL bracket

INDIANAPOLIS — With the Super Bowl quickly approaching, the Indianapolis Public Library decided to celebrate the event by unveiling the “World’s Largest Football Bracket” on Friday.

”We really are one of Indianapolis’oldest institutions, so we knew that we wanted to do something really big, flashy, fun to help support our community during this really historic time,”said Melissa Pederson, the adult program specialist with the library. “We knew that we wanted to do something fun, but something that also fit in with the library’s mission to help disseminate information and get people to the information that they want and need.”

The mission became an effort to help people find their teams in the bracket, that stretches about 120x54-feet wide on the Central Library Atrium’s north glass wall.

The project was sanctioned by the NFL and the 2012 Super Bowl Host Committee. In addition, the bracket has another interesting touch.

”You see just about the brackets, there are QR codes,”  Pederson said. “The codes lead them to news articles, videos, and pictures all about the NFC teams and the AFC teams. You can get your information at the library, just like usual.”

The application of the bracket on the wall provided some interesting times as well.

”It was an adventure (to put up),” Pederson said. “It took about three days. We were taking folks way up high, about 60 feet in the lift, to get especially those QR codes up top. It wasa lot of fun to see it happen.”

With the library being a part of the city for more than 125 years, Pederson said that they knew that doing something to celebrate this moment in time was very important.

”We knew that we needed to support the city, just as we do every day,” she said. “We thought this would be a really fun way to do it.”

The Central Library is at 40 E. St. Clair St. For more information about the Indianapolis Public Library, visit the website at www.imcpl.org.
