Community partners to feed the hungry

Hendricks County Flyer

---- — Hunger has become a national epidemic. In 2011, one in seven children in Hendricks County lived in food insecure homes.

Several local organizations and businesses have stepped up to the challenge to help feed the hungry by supporting the Hendricks County Food Pantry Coalition.

Area organizations and businesses have been generous in giving to HCFPC this winter. Terry Lee Honda of Avon donated 956 food items, Duke Energy of Plainfield presented a check for $2,000, and the Hendricks County Community Foundation granted $10,340.

“These donations from the community are important to making sure those in our community don’t go hungry this winter,” HCCF program manager Eric Hessel said. “It’s amazing to see corporations and organizations in our community partner to support a cause that is so worthwhile. The Food Pantry Coalition is a great example of an HCCF fund where donations large and small can make a huge impact.”

The Food Pantry Coalition consists of nearly two dozen organizations in Hendricks County united as a fund by the HCCF to serve two purposes: enhance the collaborative efforts of food pantries in the county to help meet basic nutritional needs of county residents who lack the financial resources to do so, and provide financial grants to families to meet immediate needs that cannot be met by other agencies within the county.

The HCCF works to improve the quality of life in Hendricks County by helping donors match their passion with community needs, awarding grants to non-profit organizations and projects, and collaborating to address community issues. The foundation manages a $9 million collection of funds created by individuals, families, businesses, and organizations for charitable purposes. In 2013, the foundation gave more than $900,000 in grants to charitable organizations and scholarships to local students.
