---- — DANVILLE — The inaugural Balanced Living Health Fair was held over weekend at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds. The event offered information for a balanced body, mind, spirit, and financial life.
Organizer Becky Homko said she was hoping the event would appeal to more people and families.
“The county has health fairs for seniors, but we don’t really have anything that promotes balance,” Homko said. “We have 40 vendors here that can interact with visitors. We also have the bounce houses for the kids. We needed something like this this time of year. You can only go to the McDonald’s playground so many times.”
The event was free to the public but a freewill offering was taken to benefit Wish For Our Heroes, a non-profit organization. Nicole Roames is on staff with the organization.
“We fund wishes for active duty military families who have found themselves short-handed,” Roames said. “We can do things like buy groceries or help with home repairs.”
The non-profit, based in Noblesville, has been up and running for four years. It’s a national organization that helps families all over the country.
“We have granted almost 1,500 wishes,” she said. “We noticed that there was a gap for military families and wanted to help.”
Roames said the organization raises funds with events like this health fair.
“We also have an amazing relationship with IMS (Indianapolis Motor Speedway),” she said. “We have a ‘Hero Zone’ we set up with is an obstacle course for kids. They can run through it for a donation.”
IMS gives the organization space to bring its ‘Hero Zone’ out to the public at all of its major events like the Indianapolis 500.
“George Hill is also one of our great supporters,” she said. “He’ll help us out by giving us tickets for special games for our military families.”
The non-profit also benefits from the sale of Mike Dean’s book, Send Me: A Soldier’s Story. Dean was special operations while he served in the U.S. Marines. In his book, he talks about several of his missions.
