The nearly 180-year-old Cartlidge Barn is a large piece of Hendricks County history and it will soon have its new home at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds in Danville.
To help with the relocation and restoration, the second annual Cartlidge Barn Farm to Table Fundraiser will return Sept. 21 at Thompson’s Red Barn, 5563 W. C.R. 650 N,, North Salem.
The event will kick off with social hour at 5 p.m. and the dinner will start at 6 p.m.
Faith Toole, Cartlidge Barn Project Fund chairperson, said the event provides a different experience.
“I love the formal dining with a casual flair ... in a barn,” she said. “Having Hendricks County restaurants prepare the entrees paired with wines from Chateau Thomas Winery will be fabulous. The generosity from our community for silent auction items also has been amazing.”
She added for her, it’s a special event because it offers people a chance to have a good time and help a good cause.
“It’s a fun event to start off with,” she said. “To have it benefit the Cartlidge Barn just makes it two-fold because the barn in itself, once it’s up at the fairground, will be a venue for anyone to be able to rent … as a venue for class reunions, family reunions, business meetings, art shows, and weddings. This will just showcase what a barn can be for those that are used to using a modern day facility.”
One change this year is the focus on Hendricks County chefs to prepare the four-course meal, which includes representatives from the Bread Basket Café & Bakery, Dawson’s Too Sticks & Stones, and Savor Thyme Café. The chefs will utilize local produce and protein from local farmers and the Hendricks County Cattleman’s Association and Pork Producers.
Toole said another interesting aspect is that students from the Area 31 Career Center’s Culinary Arts program will help the chefs again this year.
Tickets for the event are $75 per person and may be purchased online at www.hendrickscountycf.org. Jeremy Morris and The Harvest Road Band will also provide a benefit performance for entertainment.
The hand-hewn timber barn became a landmark based on its proximity along U.S. 36 in Avon.
Toole said when the barn was purchased to build the Hendricks Regional Health YMCA, owners Chuck and Cathy Mekel decided to donate it to the fairgrounds.
“They paid for the barn to be dismantled and they paid for two years of storage,” she said. “After that is where the project fund comes in, to raise money to get it reconstructed, get the electrical inside, the foundation, and then the paint.”
Construction has already begun on rebuilding the Cartlidge Barn and it should be finished by October.
The barn will then be used as an educational tool, which will highlight the pioneer way of life during annual festivals like the Hendricks County 4-H Fair.
“We're excited to welcome this new addition to our grounds,” Brenda Burnell, Hendricks County 4-H Fair Board president said in a press release. “With our facility being so modern, the history that the Cartlidge Barn brings will be an incredible educational element for Hendricks County. We hope this new building will be utilized for all types of venues and events. The possibilities are endless.”
Toole said in addition to the fundraiser dinner, a tea tasting open house and silent auction to benefit the project will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 17 at The Porch, 2411 E. Main St., Danville. She said the event will feature tea, finger foods and music, as well as massages by Sally Shattuck Massage Therapy. Tickets for the event are $20.
