IU Health honored as 'healthiest workplace'

Hendricks County Flyer

---- — Indiana University Health is committed to creating healthy workplaces and promoting healthy lifestyles for its team members and their families.

For its many forward-thinking wellness initiatives, this year IU Health was selected as one of the Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America. The award from Healthiest Employers — a leader in employee health analytics, best practices and benchmark data — recognizes 100 employers nationwide for exceptional leadership in building productive workplaces committed to employee well-being.

Amanda Gargano credits her job at IU Health West Hospital with helping to transform her life and her health. The nurse practitioner and Avon mother to six has lost 90 pounds since last June, made-over her diet and is now training to race in the Indianapolis 500 Mini Marathon.

“It all started because I was ready for a change and wanted to win the Employee Weight Loss Challenge,” Gargano said in a press release. “Once the weight started to come off, I had to keep going. Now my husband (also an IU Health West team member) and I make healthy meals and exercise a priority for our entire family.”

Healthiest Employers named IU Health the fifth healthiest company in the nation after a year-long assessment process spanning the United States to include companies of all sizes and industries.

IU Health was recognized for more than a dozen initiatives, including:

• A wellness initiative designed to help team members make healthier choices;

• Involvement with the Partnership for a Healthier America and its efforts to eliminate fried food and full-sugar beverages from its Indianapolis-area hospital cafeterias;

• An Employee Weight Loss Challenge, engaging team members at IU Health facilities statewide;

• The development of the innovative and ever-growing Garden on the Go program that brings healthy food to high-poverty neighborhoods throughout Marion County and is now expanding in Hendricks County; and

• Low-cost, on-site fitness centers and classes, walking maps and bike racks.

For the past two years, IU Health has also been named the state’s Healthiest Employer in the category of organizations with 5,000 employees or more — the largest of the award categories — by Indianapolis Business Journal.
