Local author to read debut book

Danville resident and author Pam Lawrence will have a reading and book signing for her debut work A Child’s Life at Christmas Time from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The reading and signing will occur at “The Porch,” which is located at 2411E. Main St. in Danville. Special herbal teas and home-made cookies will be served at the event.

Lawrence hopes that her book will allow a child’s joy of Christmas to be spread to all.

“I wanted to show the love of Christmas,” Lawrence said. “To show the delight in the eyes of children on Christmas. It is a way to capture that delight.”

Laura Anderson, a book reviewer for eopinions.com says, “That families will be able to enjoy this book together during the holiday season.” She goes on to say, “Author, Pamela Lawrence and illustrator Lori Compton have painted a perfect holiday portrait of poetry in A Child’s Life at Christmas Time. This timeless book will warm families and create memories for years to come.”

Lawrence and “The Porch” will share in the exposure gained from the reading. “The Porch” is only six months old and is introducing a new section where visitors can just sit and enjoy tea. Lawrence will also have similar appearances in Plainfield, Avon and more in Danville in December.

Lawrence says that the book is a collection of childhood memories, verse and light-hearted fun. She says that the book shows the time of a simpler way of living where people enjoy Christmas the way that it is supposed to be enjoyed. The book contains selections about mistletoe, trees and homemade gifts.

Lawrence grew up with six brothers and sisters in Plymouth. She has also raised four children of her own. Lawrence has lived in Central Indiana for the past 20 years and has called Danville home since 2005.

Lawrence hopes that her book will energize family traditions and express children’s excitment about Christmas time.

“I wanted to show (children’s) delight,” she said. “It’s a special time of year that they look forward to. Children get so excited about it. Parents have to nurture their creativity, fantasy and love of Christmas. It is carried on by tradition and the way they do things together. It is a family time.”

Though the book is aimed at children, it also appeals to another audience.

“It’s geared for children,”Lawrence said. “It’s a picture book. Grandmas also seem to love the book. I went in to get my hair cut and had to go by the bank. My hairdresser wasn’t there, so I left the book with another hairdresser. She had been reading it to a customer and they were in tears.”

A Child’s Life at Christmas Time was published by Refiner’s Ink Publications. It has a 8 1/2 x 11 hardcover, 50 pages and 42 full color illustrations and is on sale for $15.95. A Child’s Life at Christmas Time is carried both at “The Porch” and at “Carla’s Creations and Gifts,” which is located on the square in Danville. The book will also be displayed in Danville from Nov. 17-22 and is available online at www.refinersInk.com.
