Arts Council to have antiques appraisal fair

DANVILLE — Have an heirloom at home you think has some monetary worth? You can find out Saturday at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Complex.

The Hendricks County Arts Council is hosting an art and antiques appraisal fair from 1-5 p.m.

Jerri Crosby, who is co-chairing the event with Judy Pingel, got the idea from the Morgan County Foundation. That organization conducts an annual appraisal fair, alternating the site between Mooresville and Martinsville.

“It’s been very well attended and a lot of fun,” Crosby said. “It’s interesting to see all the different antiques people bring in — things I never thought about. But I guess there’s a lot of collectors out there.”

She thought the Arts Council could do something similar here.

“It’s fun to see all those things, and sometimes their values are pretty amazing,” Crosby said of everything from antique firearms and jewelry to china and quilts. “It’s amazing the things you having laying around that could be worth something.”

Bland Hancock, a certified business, will be doing the appraising. Almost nothing will be off-limits but there are some restrictions.

“You have to physically be able to carry it in and get it through the door,” Crosby said. Other items that can’t be appraised are historical documents, autographs, and other paper products that have to be authenticated. While antique jewelry is fine, contemporary fine jewelry is not.

Advance tickets are $25 and allow the ticket holder to receive verbal appraisal on up to three antiques. Additional tickets may be purchased for those who want more items appraised. Advance tickets are available at all State Bank of Lizton branches and all Hendricks County locations of Lincoln Bank. Tickets at the door are $30.

The Bread Basket Cafe and Bakery of Coatesville will have food at the fair.

Proceeds benefit the Arts Council, which has an annual ArtsGo! tour of county artists and their studios, and awards cash prizes to young artists and maintains displays throughout the county. The organization is working on acquiring space for a permanent artist co-op.

A temporary holiday art display begins the day after Thanksgiving on the Danville square and lasts until Dec. 22.

“That will be a good way to tell how many artists are going to participate in a gallery,” Crosby said.
