Skillman: State making every effort to ensure safety of military bases

Lt. Governor Becky Skillman said today Indiana’s military bases are on a heightened level of awareness after yesterday’s attack at Fort Hood Military Base in Texas.

Skillman serves as chairman of Indiana’s Counter-Terrorism and Security Council (CTASC).

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the servicemen and women at Fort Hood and their families,” Skillman said in a press release. “But Hoosiers with friends and family at Indiana’s bases should know that we are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of every serviceperson and civilian at those facilities.”

After yesterday’s attacks, Camp Atterbury and Muscatatuck Urban Training Center implemented additional security measures and restricted access to the bases.

“At this point, the attack doesn’t appear to be terrorism-related, but it does remind us once again that we must stay vigilant and prepare for any type of violence on our military bases,” Skillman said. “In the past several years the governor and I, the General Assembly, and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security have made every effort to protect Hoosiers from this type of senseless violence.”

Indiana’s Counter-Terrorism and Security Council was created by statute in 2005. CTASC develops and implements plans to prevent and respond to terrorism in Indiana.
