BHS seniors host jail day

MDA to benefit from lock-in

BROWNSBURG — Each year the DECA club at Brownsburg High School participates in a chapter project that they’ll use to compete with at the DECA state competition.

This year the Muscular Dystrophy Association will benefit from the business, marketing, and entrepreneurship organization when it hosts its jail lock-in for MDA Nov. 5.

During that day, students will be raising money to “arrest” teachers and administrators and others can pay to “bail out” those that are incarcerated at the school.

Lauren Fiscus, Mikyla Houston, and Caprice Carlson are the project leaders for the group this year.

“On Nov. 2, students are able to pay $1 for one minute in jail (for the teachers, administrators),” Fiscus said.

Houston added, “There’s also a $10 bail out for teachers and we’ll have pledge cards for a dollar outside the (spirit) store.”

Fiscus and Houston said the teachers and administrators were happy to help the cause.

“All of the administrators are doing it and a lot of the teachers,” Houston said. “There are a lot that wanted to do it and help out.”

Business teacher and DECA club counselor Jeff McKeon said the group has to do a certain number of mini-projects to qualify for the state competition. They’ve been selling MDA pledge cards, as well as hosting mini-fundraisers, like having students guess the amount of pieces of candy in a jar, just to name a few.

“The girls are doing a great job,” McKeon said. “They’ve really taken the bull by the horns. It’s not a small undertaking by any means.”

For the event, many of the other school organizations will be involved, including Project Lead the Way (which McKeon said is the school’s wood shop program), who will be making the actual jail cells. And a local photographer, Kim Barry of Captured Memories, will be taking photos that day.

“It’s a good school-wide charity,” McKeon said. “The good thing is we have the principal, athletics director, senior academy, it really helps us out and it’s a fun cause.”

Their goal is to send $800 to the MDA.

“We’d really love for the community to be involved,” McKeon said. “Everything we do is going to the MDA. We’re not keeping any of it.”

Houston said this cause is an important one to her.

“For me, I know I’m very blessed,” she said. “It’s important to help these kids get to do something normal for once.”

The group will be raising money Nov. 2-4. Anyone who wishes to donate to the cause may come to the school’s main office and pledge a donation.
