Fire damages Plainfield church

PLAINFIELD A church fire Wednesday evening here caused an estimated $20,000 worth of damage.

Officials were notified at 8:46 p.m. that smoke was coming from the roof of First Baptist Church of Plainfield, 1012 Stafford Road.

“The crews found an attic fire,” Plainfield Fire Marshal Kenneth Foster said Thursday morning. “It was extinguished fairly easily.”

Foster added the fire was confined to the church’s attic.

Officials are still trying to determine the fire’s cause. They were returning to the church Thursday afternoon to continue their investigation. A message on the church’s answering machine said the building was closed Thursday pending the investigation, and advised members and other visitors to stay away.

Fire departments that responded to the scene were Plainfield, Avon, Liberty and Wayne townships, and Indianapolis.
