ACSC names Teacher of the Year

AVON — Matthew Martin, a sixth-grade teacher at Avon Intermediate School West, was recently honored as Avon School Corporation’s Teacher of the Year.

Martin said he was surprised enough to even be nominated for the award and never imagined actually winning.

“It was all surreal,” he said. “It’s like a dream. There are a lot of quality people in the district. It’s humbling to know what your peers think of you and to be the representative of such a great school.”

Along with the title, Martin was named as parade marshal for this year’s Avon Heritage Fall Festival.

Martin has taught for 13 years — five with Mooresville Consolidated School Corporation and eight with the Avon Community School Corporation. He has been involved with literacy programs and a variety of other programs in the schools.

He is also an active member at Kingsway Christian Church and is involved with the drama ministry and the Kids Church Worship Team there.

Martin said his wife Dee Ann, a second-grade teacher at Pine Tree Elementary School, has been a huge part of his professional growth.

“There are only a few nights we do not talk about the situation on how to help a student or a way to deliver a lesson that will improve learning,” he said.

Each school building in the district nominates one person from their building each spring. A committee of community members who are not affiliated with the schools then look over everyone’s portfolios and choose an award recipient each fall.

Peggy Clark, director of intermediate and secondary education, said she was thrilled that the committee chose someone from the intermediate level this year.

“I am happy with their decision,” she said. “Matt is very deserving of the honor and has the best interests of the students at heart.”

Martin recently received an administrative license and said he is looking for a position as an administrator.

His portfolio has now been submitted to the Indiana Department of Education for consideration in the state Teacher of the Year competition.
