ACS honors outstanding educators

AVON — With the beginning of the 2009-10 school year on the horizon, the school system here honored its teachers of the year Monday morning.

“We’re very proud of our teachers,” Superintendent Dr. Tim Ogle said. “The faculty are just top professionals in each of our schools. We love to take this opportunity to recognize the teachers of the year.”

Each school in the Avon Community School Corporation had a teacher who was honored as a teacher of the year candidate, and then one of them was awarded the top prize. The 2008-09 winner was Linda Corcoran, a fourth-grade teacher from Maple Elementary School.

“It’s fantastic to have your peers select you,” Corcoran said. “It’s just quite an honor to have them look up to you and respect you.”

Corcoran says she’s looking forward to the school year.

“(Being named teacher of the year) doesn’t change things,” she said. “I’m going to go forward and keep doing the things that I have been doing. I want to have hands-on activities in the room and for kids to be excited. I want everybody to find success in my room.”

The other candidates for the award were Jay Webb, Avon High School; Kalie Naas, Avon Middle School; Pam Black, Avon Intermediate-East; Lori Taylor, Avon Intermediate-West; Jaymie Brown, Cedar Elementary; Jennifer Kruse, Hickory Elementary; Marcus Redick, Pine Tree Elementary; Maribeth Williams, Sycamore Elementary; and Amy Stowers, White Oak Elementary.

With students ehading back to school this week, Ogle said honoring the teachers sets the momentum in the right direction.

“It’s inspirational for our teachers to receive recognition from their peers,” he said. “(Avon is) a great place for children to go to school. We’re very proud of our work.”
