Fund to aid daughters of stabbing victim

By Ryan Palencer

BROWNSBURG

When the Brownsburg Junior Basketball League learned about the tragic death of Angela Warnock on June 21, they felt the need to take action.

“When we heard about this, we immediately called an executive board meeting,” said Bill Shufflebarger, vice president of the girls’ league. “We have always donated to parents and coaches who have passed away, but this was completely different.”

The league has a special connection with Warnock and her two children.

“Angie (Warnock) was one of our coaches last year,” Shufflebarger said. “Since there are only six of us, we get to know each other very well. Also, both girls were heavily involved in the league.”

This past year was 8-year-old Alexis’ first year in the league. Autumn, who is 11, has participated in the league since she was in second grade, both on recreation and travel teams.

“We came to the conclusion that we needed to go above and beyond,” Shufflebarger said. “So we set up a fund for the benefit of the girls.”

Angela Warnock was stabbed to death late June 21 and the girls made the 911 call stating that their father, Joseph Warnock, had committed the crime. Warnock will have a pre-trial hearing on Sept. 3, followed by a jury trial on Oct. 6. He faces felony murder charges and a misdemeanor for violating a no contact order.

Community members may donate to the fund for the Warnock girls by stopping by any branch of Hendricks County Bank and Trust.

In addition, members of the traveling teams will walk around at the Brownsburg Fourth of July celebration, taking donations.

Shufflebarger said that once someone is appointed as legal guardian of the girls, the board will choose what to do with the funds. He mentioned that a college fund is an option.

Hendricks County Bank and Trust has five locations — 1 East Main St., Brownsburg; 11 Northfield Dr., Brownsburg; 963 North S.R. 267, Avon; 200 East and U.S. 36, Danville; and 1649 E. Main St., Plainfield.
