Man arrested after barricading self in home

By Ryan Palencer

DANVILLE Police here responded to a call on South Cross Street on a report of a barricaded suspect following an alleged domestic battery with serious injury.

After arriving on the scene, police learned from the victim that Adam J. Gent, 32, of Danville, had barricaded himself inside of the home with a knife and threatened to commit suicide.

“(When we arrived) there was a woman yelling at the front (of the home),” Det. William Wright of the Danville Police Department said. “She had sustained injuries.”

According to police, the woman was crying hysterically and pleading with Gent to come outside. The woman had contusions to her face and arms, they added.

Wright said the argument began because of a financial situation.

“It is unfortunate that it is happening more frequently with the times,” he said.

Wright began negotiations with Gent through the barricaded front door and was able to establish that he did not have a hostage inside with him, but was holding a large knife to his throat.

Police said Gent appeared at least twice in front of a window with a rope around his neck. He also came to the window with the knife and acted as it he were going to cut himself. After Gent allegedly began screaming obscenities and announcing that he would not come out and did not want to go to jail, police decided that action was necessary.

“We forcibly opened the door,” Wright said. “I grabbed his wrist and put him in an arm lock, immobilizing his arm. Another officer grabbed the knife.”

Wright said there was no indication of alcohol use.

After police apprehended Wright, he was arrested on charges of felony domestic battery with serious bodily injury and felony resisting law enforcement. He was taken to the Hendricks County Jail.

The female victim was taken to Hendricks Regional Health for treatment of her injuries. As of press time, there was no update on her condition, but Wright said that she was “still resting” at the hospital.
