Plainfield Plus to sponsor event, competition

Two flower-based events presented by Plainfield Plus are on tap for Guilford Township residents.

There will be a workshop on “Year Round Gardening” June 20 at Friendship Gardens. On June 25, houses with front yard “Curb Appeal” will be judged.

Free and open to the public, the workshop will be led by Linda McCafferty of Avon, who has won national honors for her gardening expertise, as well as sharing it with others. Among the top topics of the workshop will be shade gardening, and native plants.

There will be plenty of time for questions from those attending.

McCafferty recently received an award of honor for “All Around Excellence” at the 80th National Garden Club Convention in Houston, Texas. A member of the Hendricks County Garden Club, she presents programs to many groups around the state, including the convention of the Garden Clubs of Indiana.

Skilled in designing and planting gardens for the use of the elderly and handicapped, she recently designed and restored a courtyard garden at Avon United Methodist Church.

She also judges flower arranging, and demonstrates making jewelry out of gourds and plants.

The workshop will be in the Enabling Garden at the south end of Friendship Gardens at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The annual “Curb Appeal” contest will be judged by a trio of art teachers/artists on June 25, but first they will need some yards to judge.

This one is for bragging rights only, with signs denoting first-, second-, and third-place, and possibly honorable mention, in the winning yards.

Anyone who resides in Guilford Township and wants to take part may call 839-9257 or 539-6248 and leave their name, address, and telephone number, or send a card with the information to Curb Appeal, P.O. Box 54, Plainfield, IN 46168. The yards may be nominated by the homeowner, or by anyone else, but a phone number of the resident must be included. No one’s yard will be judged without their permission.

The deadline to nominate is 5 p.m. June 23.

The judges will be Clay Bolser, Plainfield High School art teacher and basketball coach; Libby Givens Whipple, an Avon artist and PHS graduate; and, Katie Whipple, a 2009 Avon graduate who is going to art school in New York this fall.
