INDIANAPOLIS — A Federal Transit Administration (FTA) waiver will make it possible for IndyGo to resume its Park and Ride Shuttle service to and from this year’s Indianapolis 500.
IndyGo officials announced back in February that they would cease all shuttle services to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after the FTA unveiled a new set of guidelines governing how public transportation agencies would be permitted to support local events.
According to an IndyGo press release, those guidelines would leave any public transportation vulnerable to federal penalties and a loss of revenue if their services were deemed to be in unfair competition with private sector charter services.
“Given the limitations and timing of the new federal regulations, we could not risk jeopardizing our core funding source,” IndyGo President and CEO Gilbert Holmes said. “The FTA is allowing us to keep race services going for one more year. Now, we are getting ready to once again welcome race fans and serve the thousands of people who depend upon our shuttle services.”
IndyGo officials say that the waiver will allow full service for the Indy 500 and limited service for NASCAR’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard in August.
“The Speedway is pleased that the service is back for the 500 this year,” IMS Media Director Ron Green said. “It’s going to be very helpful for our fans and we appreciate the efforts of IndyGo and we look forward to working with them to find a long-term solution as we move forward.”
