DANVILLE — Candidates starting showing up at the Hendricks County Government Center earlier this week to file the necessary paperwork that will allow them to run for office in this year’s May primary election.

Francy Daum filed to run for ward three of the Plainfield Town Council. That position is currently held by Bill Kirchoff.

Daum said she’s very excited to run for office and wanted to file on the first day: Jan. 19.

“I figure the sooner I file, the sooner I can actively campaign,” Daum said. “I want to get as much exposure as I can.”

She wasn’t the only candidate turning out for the first day of filing. Laura Herzog, county election supervisor, said she had people ready to file as soon as the office opened.

“We’ve had people coming in since 8 a.m.,” Herzog said. “We normally get the bulk in the first day or two, then there is another rush as the deadline draws close.”

Filing before 9 a.m. on the first day were Marcus Turner, seeking an at-large seat on the Avon Town Council; William “Bill” Guarnery, seeking the ward three seat on the Brownsburg Town Council; and Rob Kendall, also seeking the ward three seat on the Brownsburg council. They are all registered as Republicans.

Since those first candidates filed there have been several more who visited the office and are now ready to begin campaigning.

There is a complete online listing of candidates, which is updated daily, at http://www.co.hendricks.in.us/vrweb/index.htm.

The deadline to file for candidacy in the primary election is Feb. 18.

Towns that will be holding primary elections include Avon, Brownsburg, Danville, and Plainfield. During the primary, candidates will compete for either the Republican or Democrat spot on the ballot for the general election in November.

Amo, Clayton, Coatesville, Lizton, Pittsboro, and Stilesville will hold town conventions, if there is more than one candidate from a party running for the same office. All of the towns will participate in the general election.

Voter registration is also now open for people who would like to vote in the May 3 primary election. Voter registration will close on April 4.

If voters are still not registered, there is another window of opportunity prior to the November elections. Voters can then register from May 17 to Oct. 11.
